Prescription Disposal on EAFB 9/29

Ellsworth Air Force Base

Prescription disposal Sept. 29

Ellsworth’s pharmacy and the 28th Security Forces Squadron are participating in National Take-Back Day, during which Airmen and their families may anonymously drop off expired, unused or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs at the base commissary from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 29.

The day will give Airmen and their families the opportunity to protect the
mselves from accidentally taking pharmaceuticals that aren’t for a current episode of care. Disposing of excess prescription drugs will also prevent children from either experimenting with them or mistaking them for candy.

According to Ellsworth’s Drug Demand Reduction Program, intentional misuse of prescription medications is the fastest-growing drug abuse problem in the United States. The 28th SFS, Ellsworth Drug Demand Reduction Program, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Ellsworth pharmacy encourage individuals to dispose of medicines properly to help prevent prescription theft and abuse.

For more information, please call Shelley Satterlee, 28th Medical Operations Squadron Drug Demand Reduction Program Manager, at (605) 385-3231.

National Prescrition Drug Take Back Day 9/29

Are there old prescription medications sitting in your cabinet? Get rid of them the safe way! Saturday, Sept. 29 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. You can drop your medications at the Public Safety Building from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., no questions asked. Everything we collect is incinerated, keeping it from entering the water supply or ending up in the hands of a curious child or teenager. Can't make it on Sept. 29? We have permanent drop boxes at the Public Safety Building and Evidence Building where you can leave your prescriptions anytime.

Suicide Prevention

Today, people throughout the world will be observing World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the world.

Approximately one million peoiple worldwide die by suicide each year. This corresponds to one suicide every 40 seconds. The number of lives lost each year through suicide exceeds the number of deaths due to homicide and war combined.

These figures
do not include suicide attempts, which may be up to 20 times the number of deaths.

The warning signs of suicide include:
Talking or writing about suicide or death
Talking about feeling hopeless or worthless
Saying things like "I'l going to kill myself" or "I wish I were
dead"
Has recently experienced a severe stressor or loss.
Giving things away, making final arrangements
Acquiring a gun or stockpiling pills
Loss of interest in things one cares about.

If you are feeling suicidal or know someone who is call: 1-800-784-2433 or 1-800-SUICIDE.

Character breakdown as follows:
Ten adult men and five adult women ages up to 70 years old are needed.

Victor Emmanuel Chandebise is the faithful husband to Raymonde. He is having emotional issues that lead Raymonde to believe he is cheating on her. He looks remarkably like Poche.

§ Poche is a drunken porter of the Hotel Coq d'Or. He looks exactly like Victor Emmanuel and the two are often confused. He is played by the same actor as Victor Emmanuel.
Raymonde Chandebise believes her husband Victor Emmanuel is cheating when she, in fact, is having an affair with Romain Tournel.

Camille is the nephew to Victor Emmanuel. His speech impediment (being unable to pronounce consonants) leads people to lose their patience with him. He receives a silver palate to correct his impediment from Dr. Finache but promptly loses it at the Hotel.

Lucienne Homenides De Histangua is the best friend of Raymonde and the wife of Carlos.

Don Carlos Homenides De Histangua is a client of Victor Emmanuel and an extremely jealous husband. He carries guns regularly and is not afraid to use them.

Romain Tournel is the best friend and business partner of Victor Emmanuel and the lover of Raymonde.

Dr. Finache is the doctor for the Life Insurance Co. that Chandebise and Tournel work for. He is a personal friend of Victor Emmanuel and his nephew Camille and helps them with their issues. He is a frequent patron of the Hotel Coq d'Or.

Etienne is the nosy butler of Victor Emmanuel, married to Antionette.

Ferallion is the militarous proprietor of the Hotel Coq d'Or, the nephew of Baptistin, and the husband of Olympe.

Olympe is an ex-prostitute and the wife of Feraillon.

Antionette is the cook in the Chandebise home, married to Etienne but having an affair with Camille.

Eugenie is a maid in the hotel, may or may not be fooling around with Poche.

Baptistin is Feraillon's drunken uncle whom he employs.

Rugby is randy guest at the hotel. He attempts to seduce Lucienne and Antionette.

Great Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out (FREE)

What: Great Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out

When: Thursday, Sept. 6 through Saturday, Sept. 8

Where: Thursday, Sept. 6, Fillmore Mine; Friday, Sept. 7, Rochford; Saturday, Sept. 8, Lead-Deadwood, wet sale at Deadwood Masonic Temple, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Admission: Free to the public

Novice and professional artists are invited to be inspired by the scenery at the historic mining camps of Timon, Rochford, and Lead and Deadwood at this year’s Great Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 6 through Saturday, Sept. 8.

The Paint Out was started eight years ago by John and Jan Humphrey, owners of the Blue Dog Art Gallery in Lead. The term “plein air” means to paint outside and that’s what participating artists have done in years past, painting in Black Hills settings that include South Canyon, Lead, Meeker Ranch and Pearson Ranch in Deadwood.

When the Humphreys retired in 2010, the Lead Deadwood Arts Center took over the event, holding last year’s Paint Out in conjunction with Deadwood’s Festival of Books.

“It was a great match,” said Karen Everett, executive director of the Lead Deadwood Arts Center. “Beautiful places with great historical buildings always make gorgeous settings for the Paint Out.”

Any artist may register for the Paint Out until Saturday, Sept. 8. Most participants are from the area, although some have come from as far away as Europe.
Some of the more prominent area artists at last year's Paint Out included Tim Peterson, Gary Steinley, Bill Feprol and Sandy Newman.

“They just kind of show up,” said Everett, adding that about 18 turned out last year, and in the past upwards of 35 people participated in the Paint Out, which gives the artists a rare chance to get together.

“The event creates a real camaraderie for the artists, and they inspire each other,” she said.

Any medium, including watercolor, acrylic, oil, and pastel, may be used and artists are free to paint the nearby scenery or any other subject they choose. All skill levels and ages are welcome. Although there is no age limit, Everett said there has never been a child artist in the Paint Out.

“If a child is inspired by art, then they should participate,” Everett said. “In fact, last year one of our youngest participants painted one of the pieces that was sold.”

On Thursday, Sept. 6, artists participating in the Paint Out will convene at the Fillmore Mine, moving to Rochford on Friday, Sept. 7. On Saturday, Sept. 8, the event will culminate with a “wet sale” at the Masonic Temple in Deadwood from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Paintings created during the Paint Out will be on display and for sale there, with the artists pricing their own work.

The public is invited to attend the wet sale, so named because the work is so new that it sometimes really is still wet, according to Everett. Everett said in past years, small pieces sold for around $40, with larger paintings commanding prices in the $400 to $500 range.

“Seventy percent of the proceeds go back to the artists,” she said, “and the rest goes to the Arts Council and is used to continue the arts programs in the Lead/Deadwood area.”

The Paint Out is free to the public, and people are invited to come and enjoy the artwork and complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres. It’s also a social gathering for the artists, who often work alone.

“It’s a great way for artists to get together, enjoy the company of other artists, and get to paint in the beautiful Black Hills,” Everett said.

School Safety!

PLEASE READ! There are numerous crosswalks around Douglas schools and the majority of them don't have a crossing guard. Even if they are unmanned, SD law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians within the crosswalks. Children often forget traffic rules and may not be looking out for vehicles. As drivers near a crosswalk, they need to slow down and be extra alert. If there are pedestrians anywhere near the crosswalk, drivers need to STOP and let them cross. We all need to work together to make sure our kids get to and from school safely!

Douglas kicks off year with new math approach

Students in 12 classrooms in the Douglas School District will notice a significant change in the way they learn math this year — and they'll get to use iPads in class.

Classrooms in three grade schools in the district will implement the K-5 STEM Elementary Project, a program that infuses science, technology, engineering and math principles into the kindergarten through fifth-grade curriculum, Diana Koch, assistant superintendent of the Douglas district, said Tuesday, the first day of school at the school district.

Koch said the program will introduce an inquiry-based math model, which focuses on teaching students to problem-solve rather than memorize and regurgitate. "To really understand the math is what their goal is," she said.

Koch said the middle school and high school math curriculum already incorporates an inquiry-based math approach.

The inquiry-based implementation is thanks to an $809,577 grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity, awarded to the district in June. The grant is intended to assist military-connected education institutions, Koch said.

Two kindergarten classrooms and two first-grade classes at Badger Clark Elementary, two second-grade and two third-grade classes at Francis Case Elementary, and two fourth-grade and two fifth-grade classes at Vanderberg Elementary were chosen to pilot the new program.

The grant funds new materials, including iPads for each student in those six classrooms. Teachers will be exploring ways they can use the iPads in the classroom setting, looking for apps that will help students with learning, Koch said.

The grant also provided the district with money to hire a math leader who will oversee the grant's implementation and work with teacher trainers. The money will also be used to train teachers, Koch said.

Koch said the grant and the implementation of inquiry-based math fits perfectly with the new common core standards — new curriculum goals being implemented across all districts in the state.

"It will move along with the instructional shift that goes with common core," she said.

Koch said the district will learn from the pilot classes this year and hopefully implement the inquiry-based model throughout the grade school next year.

"There is a lot of professional development that we want to provide for the teachers in order to really do it well," she said. "We're going to start slow and make sure we cover our bases."
