Suicide Prevention

Today, people throughout the world will be observing World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the world.

Approximately one million peoiple worldwide die by suicide each year. This corresponds to one suicide every 40 seconds. The number of lives lost each year through suicide exceeds the number of deaths due to homicide and war combined.

These figures
do not include suicide attempts, which may be up to 20 times the number of deaths.

The warning signs of suicide include:
Talking or writing about suicide or death
Talking about feeling hopeless or worthless
Saying things like "I'l going to kill myself" or "I wish I were
dead"
Has recently experienced a severe stressor or loss.
Giving things away, making final arrangements
Acquiring a gun or stockpiling pills
Loss of interest in things one cares about.

If you are feeling suicidal or know someone who is call: 1-800-784-2433 or 1-800-SUICIDE.
