8/20/2012 - ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- Ellsworth's pharmacy and the 28th Security Forces Squadron are participating in National Take-Back Day, during which Airmen and their families may anonymously drop off expired, unused or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs at the base commissary from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 29.

Message from Ellsworth AFB School Liaison Officer

So the question of the day is "how did pick-up go?" I was at Badger Clark this afternoon and there were definitely some bugs to work out. Ideally, here’s how Badger Clark’s pick up is supposed to work. The buses will be the first to line up on Briggs St and will pick up the bus kids, who are released at 2:40pm. After the buses leave, parents will begin pulling up on Briggs (facing north) and p
ick up their students, who are released around 2:50pm. In order to keep traffic moving, parents won’t park their vehicle and walk to get their child because that just slows down the process. The teachers will make sure students get to the appropriate vehicles. Also, parents won’t park on Briggs facing south as that will force their child to cross traffic to get to their vehicle. And parents definitely won’t make a U turn on Briggs (we saw a few of those today).

Now, this ideal plan didn’t happen today. Some of the buses initially parked in the wrong place and teachers didn’t have good visibility of parents pulling up, forcing some parents to park and walk to get their students. The school is working through those issues with the buses. Things were confusing for everyone and traffic got a little clogged up, but in the end, the students were supervised and safe. This is a work in progress and there’s a learning curve for both the school and parents. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, there is always much more traffic on the first day of school. It will get better.

With that said, let me know how things went for you and I’ll pass on your concerns. The district is focused on making drop off and pick up a safe and efficient (as possible) process for everyone. Together, we can make this work. Again, thank you for your patience!

Thunderstorms are possible through early evening across the Black Hills and southwestern South Dakota. Otherwise, mostly clear skies are expected, with lows mainly in the 60s. Record high temperatures are possible tomorrow, with highs generally 95 to 105. Breezy southerly winds, along with the hot and dry weather, will worsen the fire conditions across the area; therefore, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for Wednesday. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms across northwestern South Dakota in the afternoon, but skies will be mainly sunny across much of the area.

Heat-related illnesses and first aid

Heat stroke, the most serious form of heat-related illness, happens when the body becomes unable to regulate its core temperature. Sweating stops and the body can no longer rid itself of excess heat. Signs include confusion, loss of consciousness, and seizures. "Heat stroke is a medical emergency that may result in death! Call 911 immediately.

Heat exhaustion is the body's response to loss of water and salt from heavy sweating. Signs include headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst, and heavy sweating.

Heat cramps are caused by the loss of body salts and fluid during sweating. Low salt levels in muscles cause painful cramps. Tired muscles—those used for performing the work—are usually the ones most affected by cramps. Cramps may occur during or after working hours.

Heat rash, also known as prickly heat, is skin irritation caused by sweat that does not evaporate from the skin. Heat rash is the most common problem in hot work environments.

The chart below shows symptoms and first aid measures to take if a worker shows signs of a heat-related illness.

Illness Symptoms First Aid*
Heat stroke Confusion
Fainting
Seizures
Excessive sweating or red, hot, dry skin
Very high body temperature
Call 911
While waiting for help:

Place worker in shady, cool area
Loosen clothing, remove outer clothing
Fan air on worker; cold packs in armpits
Wet worker with cool water; apply ice packs, cool compresses, or ice if available
Provide fluids (preferably water) as soon as possible
Stay with worker until help arrives

Heat exhaustion Cool, moist skin
Heavy sweating
Headache
Nausea or vomiting
Dizziness
Light headedness
Weakness
Thirst
Irritability
Fast heart beat
Have worker sit or lie down in a cool, shady area
Give worker plenty of water or other cool beverages to drink
Cool worker with cold compresses/ice packs
Take to clinic or emergency room for medical evaluation or treatment if signs or symptoms worsen or do not improve within 60 minutes.
Do not return to work that day

Heat cramps Muscle spasms
Pain
Usually in abdomen, arms, or legs
Have worker rest in shady, cool area
Worker should drink water or other cool beverages
Wait a few hours before allowing worker to return to strenuous work
Have worker seek medical attention if cramps don’t go away

Heat rash Clusters of red bumps on skin
Often appears on neck, upper chest, folds of skin
Try to work in a cooler, less humid environment when possible
Keep the affected area dry

Current conditions prime for increased snake activity

8/21/2012 - ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- With all of the construction taking place on and around base, as well as the dry climate conditions, area residents may begin to notice a few uninvited "guests," such as snakes, in their homes and yards.

Kenneth Grimes, 28th Civil Engineer Squadron pest management foreman, said snakes are attracted to well-maintained yards for a variety of reasons.

"Generally, snakes are coming in because of the drought," Grimes said. "They're looking for the lush, green grass from us watering our lawns, and they're looking to eat the insects and rodents the moisture brings in."

Grimes said there has not yet been an increase in the number of snakes in base housing, but there are certain species native to this area. "People may find garter snakes," Grimes explained. "They are black, with green or yellow stripes. They're not poisonous, but will hiss and strike if cornered."

There are also a large number of bull snakes in South Dakota, which can easily be mistaken for the more dangerous prairie rattlesnake. "Bull snakes look similar to prairie rattlesnakes - they hiss and shake their tail, as well," Grimes said. "Bull snakes aren't poisonous, but they will bite. A prairie rattlesnake has a subdued green or gray color, with an average size of about two to three feet."

For more information on the state's indigenous snake population, visit www.gfp.sd.gov/wildlife.

Tech. Sgt. Jeromy Bryington, 28th CES NCO in charge of pest management, said he and the other seven members of the shop work hard to educate Airmen and their families about the local varieties of snakes, and what to do if they spot one.

"We do briefings at Right Start and other classes," said the Montana native. "In addition to the briefings, we also work directly with public health to inspect places like the DFAC (dining facility) for flies and other pests."

Grimes, who hails from Illinois, said there are certain measures base residents can take to help prevent snakes from lingering in their lawns or homes.

"Snakes like cover," Grimes explained. "Keep the area of your lawn around your house cut low. Get rid of any likely hiding places - don't leave a lot of wood or other things like brush piles laying on the ground, and keep leaves and other debris away from the house. Also, repair cracks in your house's exterior because snakes only need about a quarter of an inch to get inside."

Bryington said that although the pest management staff is on hand to assist Airmen and their families who have come into contact with snakes, it is essential for the animal to be monitored until they arrive.

"The important thing is to keep the snake in your line of sight," Bryington said. "Leave it alone, but keep an eye on it. If you do get bitten, stay calm and seek medical attention immediately."

Bryington and Grimes added that many times, the best course of action to take against a snake is none at all.

"Snakes are valuable animals - they eat insects, rodents and other things," Grimes said. "We don't want to kill them, our job is to relocate them to a less populated area. They play an important role in our environment."

People who see a snake or other pest can call the 28th CES Pest Management Office at (605) 385-2521, or call (605) 385-2580 after duty hours.

Awana Club at Base Chapel

Looking for a fun, safe place that your kids (and the whole family) can learn about the Bible? Awana is that place! The EAFB Chapel is now offering Awana starting September 5. Every Wednesday from 1800-2000 at the Chapel Activity Center. We have clubs for kids ages 3 years - 6th grade! (Nursery is available for volunteers only) Older middle-schoolers and high-schoolers are welcome and encouraged to come be student helpers (and to attend their own youth group). Adults/Parents (we haven't forgotten about you!) are also welcome and encouraged to spend some time as listeners/helpers/leaders in Awana and also attend our adults Bible Study held at the same time/location. As if that isn't enough... :) we will also serve dinner before club starts so that families can come and share a meal together - one less thing to worry about on a weeknight! You can stop by the chapel and pick registration forms up or email lynette.teall@ellsworth.af.mil to request one by email. There is a $20 registration fee for the year (Sept - May) per child.

Big/Brother/Sister Program

Dear Friend of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills, As we prepare for the 2012-2013 school season fast approaching, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills would like to say thank you for your past support for this organization. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills thrives through the support of our friends in the area that Big Brothers Big Sisters continues to grow and flourish. We are excited for the school year to begin and to commence our “Big” and “Little” matches for our School Mentoring Program. As you reflect on your making a difference with your “Little” we hope that you will continue to provide support and make more positive and lasting impressions for a “Little.” Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to have you continue to make a difference in a child’s life and are in need of volunteers for “Littles” in our schools. If you can donate one hour a week to your “Little” with mentoring at the school, would you consider opening your heart to provide an equally rewarding gift to a waiting child? We continue to move forward in recruiting new volunteers to be matched with the children awaiting a Big Brother or Big Sister in our program. We are seeking volunteers who will meet with the children one hour each week in the school. This agency’s goal is that someday there will be no children waiting for that special “match” and contribute to a very special child’s life in providing a caring friend. If you know someone who would like to make that difference in a child’s life with mentoring education and providing positive support and experiences, please give us a call. Thank you for your support to children and the community! Pratt Anspach Match Support Specialist School Mentoring Program pratta@bigmentors.com

You never know when that will be so the message is clear: Don't drink and drive, and don't drink underage. Its pretty simple. Help Is There

I just wanted to say that Kevin has been deployed a couple of times, but not when I had a child. Some say it's harder when you have children some say it's easier...I would not know. All I know is that when my Dad died I was suffering extreme depression and didn't realize there was help out there. SO, if you are experiencing depression/anxiety there are so many resources you can use, 1. talk to you your Doctor, 2. talk to your key spouse they are RICH in information. 3. there is counseling/spirtual/regular whatever you prefer. 4. there is Child In Use Behavioral Program 605-415-2923. Just know there is help out there.

message from the 28th today

Today Posts- message from the 28th Bomb Wing- To the Parents of Rushmore Heights and Prairie View children, hoping for a school bus resolution (this does NOT include children in the School Age Program at the Youth Center): I realize school is officially now less than 1 week away and yet we still do not have even a solid offer from a bus company. Many irons are in the fire, and I expect to hear something within the next day or two. Know tha t whatever offer is made, it will not be close to the price we heard at the Town Hall - expect it to be at least double per child, per month. You should absolutely have your "no bus plan" ready to execute for the first day of school. I certainly do, and in fact rode the route with a friend yesterday just to try it out. We will update you as soon as we hear anything more. Many of you will receive an email today from Rushmore Bus Service - the email address born from our recent Town Hall meeting. Look for those emails and updates on Facebook. Thanks for your patience!
